my love and i split and so i am left with an ailing heart that could use some good old grateful dead comfort. after listening to looks like rain during all waking hours for a couple days, i thought id ask for some suggestions for some tunes that you all would think i could use right now. and in particular, from which shows?

The High Fidelity soundtrack is the greatest NON-DEAD break-up music, ever, bar none. Sink down in to your break-up songs and when your ready to feel better come back to GD or reggae. Best wishes my friend...

damn. thank you all for your response. thanks for the advice and the song pointers. it really means more than you might know. i knew help would be on the way. as humans we all experience the same emotions good and hurtful and ill be damned if that doesnt make us all brothers and sisters.

"Bird Song" 06-22-73 (go for the ambience of the audience recording)

"...dry your eyes on the wind..."

avoid "Stella Blue" for at least 6 months

also "My Foolish Heart", either Bill Evans live at the Village Vanguard (1961) and/or Lenny Breau live at Bourbon Street (1983)

you are welcome friend - we have all been through shit in certain degress - some worse than others. reflect, and try to find peace within yourself - it is easier to heal that way. may sound like "new age" bullshit, but i ain't no "new ager" and happy, upbeat music (no matter what band) really feels good when down.
let those negative emotions loose when you need to, but remember to ground yourself in your own wonderful self-worth if things get a touch out of control (which they will at times). peace and be well :)

I have been there myself and still going through it after 4 years. Don't be listening to tunes like Looks Like Rain, Wish You Were Here, Get Out of My Life etc. You need upbeat tunes to cheer your heart. Shakedown, Scarlet Fire, Sugar Mag, etc. Get your mind of it with upbeat - happy tunes man. Don't wollow - it does not good, i tried it and just became more despondent. You need a nice '77 first sets with a hoppin second sets to lift your soul. The Boston, Cornell, Buffalo shows from may '77 helped me - just skipped the "depressing" tracks.
No matter if it is your fault, her fault, both faults, you need happy music. Lose yourself in the jams, not in the depressing lyrics.
Life is a journey and sometimes an epic tragedy. it is sad what you are going through. I feel what you are feeling (even though mine was my own fault). I may be just blowing smoke out my ass, but please don't listen to the depressing tracks. You need UPLIFT. Bop around with some good upbeat DEAD and you will feel better, atleast for a little while. I wish you the best, it is very very very hard, but you can get through it. Beautiful tunes are "the music of the spheres" - lose yourself and love yourself for atlest 30 minutes a day and things will feel just a bit better - not great - but better. Keep the faith in your own sense of self and feel the love of those around you who support you during this difficult time. Peace man, and good luck. My prayers are with you.

so i guess those songs didnt help jerry or bob dylan ...etc...through their tuff times...

sad songs are good for the soul...as long as they aren't about killing yourself ..lyrics are important and your feelings come out in those kinda songs and then you can let it all go ..release yourself from everything..those happy songs are only a cover up to your true inner feelings...

check out pearl jams "release" or "in hiding " or "black"
you can relate or at least i can to these kind of songs cause what they are about..exactly what this cat is goin through ...my 2 cents...

i can too man - believe me i have been there for years. sometimes the "sad stuff" though can be self defeating, even it at times it may provide an emotional catharsis. i was simply trying to provide some uplift to a person who is feeling very down. maybe a mix is needed. i have gone both routes, and usually, when needing some relief, have turned to the more happy music, rather than wallowing in my own self pity and self inflicted suffering. i hear your argument and do not totally disagree at all. it was just my two cents too. :) inner peace through music.

btw - nice call those Vedder tunes

either way it's a tuff situation to be in ..i was in that situation along time ago.the dead along with other bands really helped me get through /over it ..especially goin to shows...this dude should try and get out and catch some shows ..it really helped me !!!

too bad pearl jam isn't on the archive.
pearl jam is sick right now!!! they are kickin ass this tour ..doin all their old good shit ..like leash,rats..and the new songs are killer live . they also have done some neat covers like dylan's "masters of war" the stones "waiting for a friend" , the who's " baba o' riley" they also regulary cover victoria williams "crazy mary" ..

mccready doin star spangled banner at the end of yellow ledbetter. this band keeps things interesting and they really treat their fans well. a buddy and girlfriend got to drink vedder's wine from the frt row in cincinnati...
imagine jerry giving out acid to the crowd !!!

peace and jam on!

We've all been there man, all you can do is put it in the past and move on down the line. Head to Oakland 88-12-28 for "All Over Now" a smoking "Miracle" & "Foolish Heart" or "Lovelight". Then see if you can find Hothouse Flowers "It'll be Easier(in the Morning") That song pulled me thru some serious shit years ago.

If you really want to wallow nothing beats Leonard Cohen. "The Essential Leonard Cohen" is a good place to start, especially disk two. In my pantheon of song writers it's Dylan, Garcia\Hunter, and L.Cohen in no particular order. I allways wished the Dead had covered a Cohen song or two. Listen with caution it may push you completely over the edge.

Good luck.
